Paddy's Market R.I.P., Briggait, 15 May 2009

Today was the date set for the Traders of Paddy's Market to vacate their stalls. By the time I had arrived there early this morning the owners had moved in, supported by a heavy Police presence, to fence off the lane and clear out the arches which the market had occupied for over 35 years. The traders who could bear to turn up and watch events unfold stood by in sombre mood as vans removed what remained of their stock and then made a procession to the City Chambers in one last act of defiance against the Council which forced their eviction, ending 200 years of tradition in the Briggait area of the City.

Some traders, those young and able enough to start over again, will re-open their stalls in the City's other flea market at the Barras...while that continues to trade....
